This paper addresses the question of whether we use general object mechanisms to process characters or more specialised processes. A multidisciplinary literature review includes examples of potential specialisations in other domains, such as speech or face recognition, introducing specific forms of expertise. A terminology which clarifies the relationships and representations in the character recognition process is used in identifying similarities and differences between attributes of shape perception and character recognition. The importance of the visual similarities among characters within a font and the retention of font information suggest that expertise in character recognition reflects modifications to our general perceptual processes, i.e., specialisation.
